Laney watched her life disappear in the rear view mirror. If only her memories would disappear as well…

She was two hours west of town when the lights in the big two-story brick house came on. She couldn’t possibly hear the shouting and cursing, yet her insides were knotted and her stomach churned. If he caught her, he would kill her. Of that she was certain.

Forever Blessed is the story of a young mother who is on the run from an abusive husband with her three children in tow. Does Laney find safety from a controlling manipulating spouse? Does Paul track her down and make her pay for her disobedience? Where does God fit into all this?

For fiction, Darlene Shortridge writes real stories for real people… In Forever Blessed, Ms. Shortridge carves a gripping and heartfelt tale about spousal abuse with stark conflicts and turbulent emotions, while entwining the tale with the Lord's eye-opening truth! Forever Blessed is about faith, triumph over trauma, a veil lifted from an unspeakable subject, and learning to rely on God’s sustaining strength. I look forward to book three of The Women of Prayer series!

Laney is on the run with her three children. She has finally managed to get away from her abusive husband Paul, at least for now, but she knows it's only a matter of time before he finds them. Laney runs to a friend from college, Sheila, who now operates a safe house for abused women. There Laney comes face to face with the power of God to work through even the difficulties of her life. Even as Laney is starting to feel more comfortable with the idea of God in her life, she knows that Paul is still out there somewhere and now strange things are beginning to happen to the people she now has in her life.

In Forever Blessed, Darlene Shortridge has woven a fascinating and exciting story that touches on a very real issue for many people. She takes the characters through several real and believable circumstances and is able to show how prayer and faith in Jesus are able to provide comfort in the midst of them. The story is captivating from beginning to end and she keeps the plot building and moving as you wonder how Laney is truly going to end up confronting her past. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through this and I know that others will find it a wonderful and heart-wrenching read.

Forever Blessed Women of Prayer Book 2 edition by Darlene Shortridge Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

What a powerful book. I also was the "1 out of 4" that has dealt with spouse abuse. The book depicted it well and amazingly covered all the different elements of abuse and how women have chosen to deal with it. Since I am the age of the "mothers" that were abused in this book I know of the era when it was not talked about and people turned their heads. I even went to a priest that told me and I quote "your husband can do anything he wants to you". I am one of the lucky ones that eventually got out of the relationship but just like Keisha some don't. So many if they leave go back because that is all they know and they have such low self-esteem. This book dealt with the real emotions and repercussions of abuse and trying to get out of the situation.

God was a huge element of my finally breaking free. Unfortunately it was after the kids were grown and two of my boys were married with the third and last child engaged. Although my physical abuse was not as severe as Laney's my husband also abused our three boys. However, I could so relate to Paul's, her husband, reactions and his thoughts. It all sounded so familiar to me. Same words, same thought and similar actions.

If you have dealt with abuse, are being abused now, whether physically or verbally, know someone else who has ever dealt with abuse this book is a must. There is help out there and you are not alone. God can give you the strength to get out of it and get help. He did it for me and he will do it for you. In my situation I did leave when our boys were younger (ages 6, 9 and 12) with God's help. My husband went for counseling and I thought he had changed so I went back. In some ways he did change and the physical abuse stopped (he was afraid I would call the police and I would have). But, his controlling way and his verbal abuse continued. I stayed for 15 years more with the Grace of God keeping me. Being in the house protected my children more than being out of the house because he had too much contact with them and he was sooooo convincing. He knew how to say the right things to get people on his side. However after the 15 years he starting threatening me again and I prayed, asked God if I could leave, He told me YES and gave me much peace. That was 21 years ago and I have never looked back. I have a great relationship with my boys and with my God. You can have the same thing.

Read this book. You will be glad you did. There are some editing problems but I couldn't mark down for it because the substance of the book was too powerful and real.
Book 2 in the Women of Prayer series deals with the real life horror of domestic abuse. Well written and complex, Shortridge kept my attention from start to finish as we followed Laney's life after escaping with her 3 children from domestic abuse. I loved the way she used her faith thread to show how God walks with us through even the most horrific circumstances and gives us the strength we need to move through them and beyond them.

There are some graphic descriptions in the book of domestic abuse but this is part of domestic abuse. The book would not have held the power it did without this true portrayal. I loved how Laney at the end holds her head high and doesn't cover up the signs of the abuse she took for the last time. I also admired her response at the end that showed true forgiveness and love for her abuser even though she would never allow it again. I am sure that she only was able to do that through her faith in God.

The group of prayer ladies was incredible and such strong prayer warriors. I loved the secondary characters Sheila, Keisha and Ella as well as Pastor Jessi, Pastor Mark and Austin. Each of them had a role to play that helped Laney grow in faith and strength. Ella was my favorite!

Shortridge's books deal with realistic, gritty issues and she handles them with compassion and faith.

FAVORITE QUOTES (Too many to list them all.)

"Some things may end, but as long as we believe and have faith, there is a new day to wake up to."

'He (God) want us to remain faithful to him through our trials and our tests and when we obtain the blessing that is coming, we will count everything we have gone through as worth it."

"I challenge each of you to go out and love someone. Love someone who you think is unlovable. Show them the love of Christ and change their lives forever."
